On Thursday Recovery.gov released its first hard data on stimulus jobs.  They provided an interactive map of the U.S.

Hover over the map to see 209 jobs were created in Kansas:

Click on Kansas on the map to see more detail.  Below is the resulting map showing the locations of recovery jobs in Kansas:

Recovery Information for Kansas from Recovery.Gov, 10/14/2009

The legend on Recovery.gov map above shows 215  jobs were created in Kansas. The reason for that number not matching the earlier 209 figure is not known.

Yesterday ProPublica published an article, We Made Recovery.gov’s New Stimulus Data Easier to Download.  ProPublica downloaded 183 separate files from recovery.gov, cleaned them up a bit, and made them available for analysis.  After studying the Recovery.gov data, I was convinced the ProPublica data was far easier to use.

I downloaded both the Contractor and Subcontractor Excel files and loaded the data into a database for manipulation.  I extracted the data for Kansas using four database queries.

The first set of data I extracted was the set of prime contractors doing work in Kansas.  Click below on the “Full Screen” button to view this table:

Eye on the Stimulus: Prime Contractors With Work in Kansas

Summary information at the bottom of this table almost matched the original data for Kansas given at the beginning of this article:

  • 209.46 jobs
  • $20,752,682 in total federal ARRA funds

The majority of the jobs, 169, were for the U.S. Army or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Manhattan, Ft. Leavenworth, Overland Park, and Wichita.

Some prime contractors in Kansas received contracts for work in other states:

  • BABCOCK CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, LLC, 1 contract, 5 new jobs in Georgia

  • TERRACON CONSULTANTS, INC., 4 contracts, 18.16 jobs in Colorado, Florida, and Wisconsin
  • WESTERN AIR MAPS, INC., 5 contracts, 0 new jobs in Illinois, Missouri and Maryland

These subcontractors received work in Kansas, but it’s not immediately clear from the data how many jobs were involved in their work in Kansas:

  • A & H Electric, Inc.
  • American Boiler Services, Inc.
  • Applied Ecological Services Inc
  • Arrowhead Contracting, Inc
  • Atlas Electric, LLC
  • Bayer Construction Company, Inc.

Some Kansas subcontractors received work in other states, including

  • Apex Government Solutions L.L.C.
  • Layne Christensen Company
  • Terracon Consultants, Inc. (7 contracts)
  • The Judy Company Inc

All statistics above were for 3rd quarter 2009 work.  Much of the work has not yet begun so stats next quarter may look better.

Great story. We looked into the stimulus “bump” in New Mexico. Our state has recevied over $260 million. We have precisely 419.02 jobs to show for it. No more no, no less. Thanks for tipping us to these stats. http://newmexico.watchdog.org/2009/10/21/419-02-jobs-savedcreated-in-new-mexico/
