UPDATES: Moran donations, see below.

The Washington Post reported Thursday evening that Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.) is a subject in two separate ethics probes focusing on seven members of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. The name of John Murtha (D-Pa.) tops the list of seven subcommittee members who received large donations from PMA Group and its clients and steered earmarks to PMA clients.

Other members being investigated are include Peter J. Visclosky (D-Ind.), James P. Moran Jr. (D-Va.), Norm Dicks (D-Wash.), Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) and C.W. Bill Young (R-Fla.). A march 2, 2009, report by the Center for Responsive Politics reported donations by PMA to the subcommittee since 1998.

From the Post story:

Together, the seven members have personally steered more than $200 million in earmarks to clients of the PMA Group in the last two years and received more than $6.2 million in campaign contributions from PMA and its clients in the last decade, according to an analysis by Congressional Quarterly and Taxpayers for Common Sense.

A story by The Hill in February mentioned Tiahrt’s connections in the growing PMA controversy:

Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.), who also serves on the appropriations panel, said the earmarks for PMA clients in the omnibus bill don’t bother him because lobbyists are in his office all day and none of them curry any special favors with him because of campaign donations. “I had 12 meetings in my office today for people lobbying me about something,” he said with a shrug. “It’s part of the process.”

The Hill reported Rep. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), who is battling Tiahrt for Sen. Sam Brownback’s Senate seat, also took money from PMA, $1,500, but returned it.

UPDATE Nov 5: According to OpenSecrtets.org, Rep. Moran received $57,950 from PMA and its associates.

UPDATE Nov. 6: From Aaron Trost in Moran’s office:

Originally when the PMA stories broke, it was reported by Open Secrets that Moran for Kansas took $14,750 from PMA PAC. The Moran campaign didn’t think that was accurate.  We quickly reviewed our internal database and learned that we accepted only $1,500 from PMA PAC back in 2001 and 2002.  We have given that $1,500 to charity.

Turns out that $13,250 of the $14,750 in PMA contributions credited to “Moran for Kansas” were actually to Congressman Jim Moran’s (D-VA) campaign. This $13,250 error was due to misreporting by PMA.   We immediately notified the FEC and they verified that PMA misreported $13,250 in contributions.  The FEC then made the appropriate requests to the PMA Group to correct its records.
